Rodgers, John 1727-1811

John Rodgers was a presbyterian minister. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, August 5, 1727, and died in New York City, May 7, 1822. He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church at St. George's, Delaware (1749) and the Presbyterian Church in New York City (1765), where he succeded David Bostwick). He was an antagonist of the Episcopalians and an ardent and active patriot throught the Revolution. Dr. Rodgers held several eminent positions including moderator of the first general assembly held in 1789, vice-chancellor of the New Yor state university from its creation in 1787, and president of the Missionary Society, which was established in 1796.
