Gillespie, George 1683-1760

GILLESPIE, George, clergyman, born in Glasgow. Scotland, in 1683; died 2 January 1760. He was educated at the University in his native City, licensed to preach by the presbytery of Glasgow early in 1712, and came to New England that year, bringing a letter of recommendation from Principal Sterling to Cotton Nather. Shortly afterward he preached for the Church at Wood-bridge, New Jersey, and in 1713 was ordained minister of the Church at White Clay Creek, Delaware His charges for several years, besides White Clay, embraced Red Clay, Lower Brandywine, and Elk River. He took part in the controversy that was for years waged in the synod, and resulted, in 1741, in the historic division of that body. He withdrew with the excluded members, but remained neutral until 1744, when he returned to the old synod.

"Treatise against Deists and Free Thinkers: Proving the Necessity of Revealed Religion" (Philadelphia, 1735);
"Letters to the Presbytery of New York" (1740);
"Sermon against Divisions in Christ's Churches" (1740); and
"Remarks upon Mr. George Whitfield Proving Him a Man Under Delusion" (1744).
