Buist, George 1770-1808

BUIST, George, clergyman, born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1770; died in Charleston, South Carolina, 31 August, 1808. He was educated at Edinburgh University, attained great proficiency in philology, was called to a church in Charleston in 1793, and in 1805 became principal of the College in that city. He published an abridgment of Hume's "History" for schools (1792) and a version of the Psalms (1796), and contributed to the "British Encyclopaedia." A volume of his sermons, with a memoir, was published in 1809.
