Wallis, John 1616-1703

John Wallis (November 23, 1616October 28, 1703) was an English mathematician who is given partial credit for the development of modern calculus. Between 1643 and 1689 he served as chief cryptographer for Parliament and, later, the royal court. He is also credited with introducing the symbol ∞ for infinity.

He was also an eminent divine, sometime Savilian Professor of Geometry, in the University of Oxford, Keeper of the Archives, Member of the Royal Society of London, Sometime One of the Secretaries to the Assembly of Divines at Westminster, and Chaplain in Ordinary to King Charles the Second.
