John Taylor Pressly (1795-1870)

The Presbyterian minister John T. Pressly was born in Abbeville, S.C., March 28, 1795. He studied under John Mitchell Mason at the Associate Reformed Theological Seminary in New York, N.Y. (now Union Theological Seminary). Pressly served as pastor to a Presbyterian Church in Abbeville before simultaneously obtaining a professorship at Western Theological Seminary (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and a pastorate at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (Allegheny City, Pa.) in what is now Pittsburgh in 1830. Pressly died August 13, 1870.

Ralston, Samuel 1756-1851

Samuel Ralston, a Presbyterian clergyman, was born in Ireland where his parents' home was a nursery of Gospel truth. He completed his studies at the University of Glasgow. Some years after his entrance on the ministry, he migrated to America (1794). After itinerating about two years in Eastern Pennsylvania, he went West, and was called immediately, in the year 1796, to the pastoral care of the united Congregations of Mingo Creek and Williamsport, (now Monongahela City,) where he remained during the residue of his life, --Pastor of the latter branch, thirty-five years, and of the former, forty years.

The Presbyterian Church of Monongahela was organized in 1796 at Horseshoe Bottom by Rev. Samuel Ralston, and in 1807 it was moved to Parkinson's Ferry, where it first met in a tent. Services were held in a schoolhouse until 1815, when the first house of worship was erected, on the hill between Third and Jackson streets. In 1836 the second church was erected on Chess Street on the site of the present Eagles Building. The present church was built in the seventies at a cost of $35,000. The first pastor was Rev. Samuel Ralston, D. D. The present minister (as of 1926) is Rev. W. F. McKee, D. D., and the membership is 765.
