Shaw, Robert 1795-1863

Robert Shaw, Scottish Presbyterian (1795 - 1863) was a leader in the Original Secession Church and a minister at Whitburn (halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow). He wrote The New Theology Examined (1843) and a highly regarded commentary on the Westminster Confession: The Reformed Faith: An Exposition Of The Westminster Confession Of Faith (1845).

Shaw, Robert (1795-1863), theologian. A native of Perth, he was educated at Edinburgh University and under Archibald Bruce at the divinity hall of the Associate Presbytery in Whitburn, West Lothian. In 1817, he was ordained to follow Bruce in Whitburn, where he remained until his death. He was synod clerk for the Original Secession Church from 1834 until he and the majority of the synod joined the Free Church in 1852. His Exposition of the Westminster Confession (Edinburgh, 1845) is the most thorough commentary by a Scottish Presbyterian. Writing in sympathy with its writers, Shaw elucidates the opposing views against which the Confession was framed. Shaw wrote articles for the Biblical Repertory and Princeton Review, and received the DD from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1851. Other publications include Reflections on the Translation of Elijah (Edinburgh, 1835); and The New Theology Examined (Edinburgh, 1843), on the nature and extent of the atonement. – Sherman Isbell

Zanchi/Zanchius, Jerom (Girolami) 1516-1590

Girolamo Zanchi (Latin "Hieronymus Zanchius," thus Anglicized to "Jerome Zanchi/Zanchius") (February 2, 1516 – November 19, 1590) was an Italian Protestant Reformation clergyman and educator.

He was born the son of a noble lawyer and historian, in Alzano Lombardo near Bergamo. His father died in the plague of 1528 and his mother died only three years later. At age 15 he entered the monastery of the Augustinian Order of Regular Canons, where he studied Aristotle, languages and divinity. After completing his studies, he went to Lucca, and there under the influence of Peter Martyr Vermigli he opted for a theological career, being especially impressed by Vermigli's lectures on Romans. In addition to works of the Fathers, he became aware of Martin Bucer and Philipp Melanchthon, also read Martin Luther's writings and the Swiss reformers. John Calvin, however, had the greatest influence on him.

Even after Vermigli’s forced flight in 1542, Zanchi remained as a teacher at the monastery school. In 1551, however, he also was forced into exile. After a brief stay in Geneva, he wanted to go to England, but was called to Strasbourg and worked there as a professor of the Old Testament at the college of St. Thomas. His style is legalistic, and he interpreted with meticulous accuracy. In his overall theological orientation, he tacked neither directly along a Lutheran or a Calvinist line, although he was reckoned a Calvinist. He was one of the most learned theologians of the second half of the 16th Century, if he is not considered to be an especially original thinker. He was regarded an excellent teacher.

The demand for Strasbourg faculty and pastors to commit themselves to the Augsburg Confession created difficulties for him. He had previously declined offers to move to Geneva and Lausanne because he was committed to Strasbourg. However, he could not remain after the controversy with the Lutheran superintendent Johann Marbach. Zanchi had described the differences in the doctrine of the Eucharist between the Lutheran and Reformed as being relatively minor and also taught a strict Calvinist doctrine of predestination. After receiving many consultations from theologians outside of Strasbourg, the disputing parties were able to reach an agreement in constructing a formula of unity (The Strasbourg Consensus) signed by all the city's preachers and professors.

When Calvin chided him for his equivocation, Zanchi went public with his views again causing the controversy to erupt anew. He consequently left from Strasbourg to become the pastor of the Italian Protestant congregation in the Graubünden in Chiavenna. In 1568 he received a call to the University of Heidelberg, where he took over the chair of Dogmatics formerly occupied by Zacharias Ursinus. Here he wrote important works which tend to bear either an apologetic or polemical character. His method of presentation is quite scholastic. After the Palatinate returned to Lutheranism during the reign of Elector Ludwig VI, Zanchi moved with many other Reformed professors to the Casmirianum, a Reformed academy in Neustadt in the dominions of Count Palatine Johann Casimir. He died during a return visit to Heidelberg and was buried in the University Church.

Zanchius was a voluminous writer whose works include, Confession of the Christian Religion and Observation on the Divine Attributes. He is perhaps best known for his book The Doctrine of Absolute Predestination, which is still in publication today.

The following is a translation of the inscription on the headstone of Zanchius' grave:

'Here Zanchius rests, whom love of truth constrained
to quit his own and seek a foreign land.
How good and great he was, how formed to shine,
How fraught with science human and divine;
Sufficient proof his numerous writings give,
And those who heard him teach and saw him live.
Earth still enjoys him, though his soul has fled:
His name is deathless, though his dust is dead.'

Holford, George Peter d. 1839

George Peter Holford (d. 1839) was the second son of Peter Holford (d. 1804) who made an immense fortune by supplying London with fresh water through a canal. The Holfords had been seated at Westonbirt since 1666 when a Holford married the heiress Sarah Crew.

Shedd, William Greenough Thayer 1820-1894

William Greenough Thayer Shedd (June 21, 1820 – November 17, 1894), son of the Reverend Marshall Shedd and Eliza Thayer, was an American Presbyterian Theologian born in Acton, Massachusetts.

In 1835, Shedd enrolled at the University of Vermont, and became a protégé of UVM president James Marsh. Under the influence of his mentor, Shedd was deeply affected by the thought of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Transcendentalism. He graduated from UVM in 1839 and taught school for one year, during which time he began to attend the Presbyterian church. Being called to the ministry, Shedd entered Andover Theological Seminary in 1840 and studied under theologian Leonard Woods. He graduated in 1843.
After a short pastorate at Brandon, Vermont, he was successively professor of English literature at the University of Vermont (1845–1852), professor of sacred rhetoric in Auburn Theological Seminary (1852–1854), professor of church history in Andover Theological Seminary (1854–1862), and, after one year (1862–1863) as associate pastor of the Brick Church of New York City, of sacred literature (1863–1874) and of systematic theology (1874–1890) in Union Theological Seminary. He died in New York City on November 17, 1894.
Dr. Shedd was a high Calvinist and was one of the greatest systematic theologians of the American Presbyterian church. His great work was Dogmatic Theology (3 vols, 1888–1894). He served as editor of Coleridge's Complete Works (7 vols, New York, 1894), and he also wrote:

Smeaton, George 1814-1889

George Smeaton (1814–89) was a Scottish theologian ordained to the ministry of the Church of Scotland at Falkland in the Presbytery of Cupar (1839). He was among the numerous ministers who emerged in 1843 during the Disruption to form the Free Church of Scotland. Smeaton was a divinity school classmate and contemporary of such men as Robert Murray McCheyne and Andrew and Horatius Bonar.

He was appointed professor at the Free Church College in Aberdeen (1854), and later became Professor of Exegetical Theology at New College, Edinburgh (1857).

Moore, George Foot 1851-1931

George Foot Moore (October 15, 1851 – May 16, 1931) He graduated from Yale University in 1872, where he was a member of Skull and Bones. He was awarded the highest theological qualifiction – the D.D.. He was Professor Emeritus 1928–31, Frothingham Professor of History Religion 1904–28, Professor of Theology, Harvard University, 1902–04; President 1899–1901, Professor of Hebrew, Andover Theological Seminary, 1883–1902. He was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania and died in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

An eminent Asian scholar and a noted teacher, he wrote a number of books, including The Literature of the Old Testament (1913),History of Religions (Vol. I, 1913; Vol. II, 1919), Metempsychosis (The Ingersoll Lecture, 1914), and Judaism in the First Centuries of the Christian Era (1927). Among his technical writings, two stand out: History of Religions (1914, 1919) and Judaism (two volumes, 1927). Hoskier, Herman Charles 1864-1938

Herman Charles Hoskier (1864–1938), was a biblical scholar, British textual critic, and son of a merchant banker, Herman Hoskier (1832–1904).

Hoskier, as textual critic, supported the Byzantine text-type against the Alexandrian text-type. He compared, in Codex B and It Allies, the text of Codex Vaticanus with Codex Sinaiticus, and showed how many significant disagreements the best witnesses of the Alexandrian text have. Hoskier attempted to demonstrate that Vaticanus presents a text which has been conformed to the Coptic versions. Hoskier compared text of the Minuscule 700 with the Textus Receptus and exhibited 2724 differences.

Hoskier collated every known Greek manuscript of the Apocalypse up to 1918, a task that took 30 years for him to accomplish. The result of this work was published in 1929 (Concerning the Text of the Apocalypse). Hoskier shows parallels between Papyrus 46 and the Ethiopic Version in the Pauline epistles.

Baily (Bayly), Lewis c. 1565-1631

Lewis Bayly (possibly Carmarthen, possibly Biggar, year unknown – Bangor, 26 October 1631) was an Anglican bishop.

Life

He was educated at Oxford, became vicar of Evesham, Worcestershire, and probably in 1604 became rector of St. Matthew's Church, Friday street, London. He was then chaplain to Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (died 1612), later chaplain to King James I, who, in 1616, appointed him bishop of Bangor. He was an ardent Puritan.

Works

Bayly's fame rests on his book The Practice of Piety, directing a Christian how to walk that he may please God (date of first edition unknown; 3d edition, London, 1613; reprinted as ISBN 1-877611-66-2). It reached its 74th edition in 1821 and has been translated into French, German, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Romansh, Welsh, and into the language of the Massachusetts Indians. In The Netherlands it became the best sold reformed book of the 17th century. It was one of the two books which John Bunyan's wife brought withher—the other one being Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven (ISBN 1-877611-69-7)—and it was by reading it that Bunyan was first spiritually awakened.

Family and descendants

Bayly married Anne, daughter of Sir Henry Bagenal. Their son Nicholas Bayly represented Newry in the Irish House of Commons. Nicholas's son Edward Bayly was created a Baronet in 1730. His grandson Henry Bayly succeeded as 10th Baron Paget in 1769 and assumed the surname of Paget in 1770. He was made Earl of Uxbridge in 1784. His eldest son, Henry Paget, 2nd Earl of Uxbridge gained fame at the Battle of Waterloo and was created Marquess of Anglesey (see this article for more information on the Bayly and Paget families). Lewis Bayly died in October 1631.^[1]

Williams, John Bickerton, Sir 1792-1855

WILLIAMS, SIR JOHN BICKERTON (1792-1855), nonconformist writer, son of William Williams of Broseley, Shrop- shire, by his wife Hannah, daughter of John Bickerton, was born on 4 March 179:2 at Sandford Hall in the parish of West Felton, Shropshire. Collaterally he was related to the family of Philip Henry [q. v.] and of Matthew Henry [q. v.] In early life his parents removed to Wem in Shropshire. There he was educated, and he was articled on 17 Feb. 1806 to an attorney there. After a residence in Liverpool from 1811 to 1815, he was admitted an attorney on 23 Jan. 1816, and commenced practice in Shrewsbury. On 31 Aug. 1819 he was admitted a burgess.

Williams had from childhood deep religious impressions. He became a member of the congregational churchat Wem in the autumn of 1809, and began to form a large collection of manuscripts by the Henrys and other theologians of their school. He soon devoted his leisure to writing. His first publication was ' Eighteen Sermons of the Rev. Philip Henry, M.A., from original manuscripts,' 1816. This was followed by 'Memoirs of the Life and Character of Mrs. Sarah Savage, eldest daughter of the Rev. Philip Henry,' 1818 ; and ' Memoirs of Mrs. Hulton, one of the sisters of Mrs. Savage,' 1820. Each of these memoirs went through several editions. Memoirs of both Philip and Matthew Henry followed (in 1825 and 1828 respectively the latter was constantly reprinted), together with Matthew Henry's ' Miscellaneous Writings' (1830), Philip Henry's ' Remains ' (1848), and 'The Henry Family Memorialized' (1849). Matthew Henry's ' Commentaries ' was issued with Williams's ' Memoirs ' by Williams's son, who added notes, between 1857 and 1886.

On the passing of the municipal reform bill, Williams was elected an alderman of Shrewsbury, and in November 1836 was appointed mayor. In that capacity he presented an address to the Duke of Sussex at Kimnel Park, and this introduction to the duke, owing to a similarity of literary tastes, soon ripened into an intimate friendship. At the duke's request he was knighted at St. James's Palace on 19 July 1837 by Queen Victoria, being the first knight created by her majesty. He was elected F.S. A. in 1824, and a fellow of the American Antiquarian Society in 1838, and received the degree of LL.D. from Middleburg College, Vermont, U.S. A., in 1831.

Williams retired from practice at Shrewsbury in March 1841, and went to reside at the Hall, Wem. There he died on 21 Oct. 1855, and was buried in the cemetery in Chapel Street on the 27th. His funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. John Angell James [q . v.l on 4 Nov. His portrait was painted by Pardon, a Shrewsbury artist, in 1837, and is now in the possession of his only surviving son, Mr. E. R. Williams, solicitor, of Birmingham.

Williams married at Aston church, near Birmingham, on 27 Dec. 1813, Elizabeth, daughter of Josiah Robins of Birmingham, by whom he had three sons and two daughters. His widow died at Wem on 23 Feb. 1872, and was buried in the cemetery in Chapel Street.

Besides tracts and the works already referred to, Williams published: 1. 'Memoirs of Sir Matthew Hale, Knight, Lord Chief Justice of England,' 1835. 2. ' Letters on Puritanism and Nonconformity,' 1st ser. 1843, 2nd ser, 1846. 3. 'Gleanings of Heavenly Wisdom ; or, the Sayings of John Dod, M.A., and Philip Henry, M.A.,' 1851. He was also a frequent contributor to the ' Evangelical Magazine ' and the ' Congregational Magazine.'

Dr. Theodore Peter Letis, age 53, of Tucker, died June 24, 2005. Dr. Letis has a Ph.D from the University of Edinburgh in ecclesiastical history. Has an honors M.T.S. (magna cum laude) from Emory University. Has completed graduate studies at Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, and Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Has a B.A. in history and Biblical studies from Evangel College. He was an Author and Lecturer. President and Executive Director of the Institute of Renaissance and Reformation Biblical Studies Survived by his wife, Susan and children, Grace Letis of Grayson and Ted Letis of Snellville; sister, Tina Wood and Many other beloved family and friends. Services are at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Eternal Hills Chapel. The family will receive friends today from 5-8 PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Melwood Cemetery, Stone Mountain Arrangements by Eternal Hills Funeral Home, Snellville, Georgia.

Edward F. Hills (1912-1981) was a Presbyterian scholar, perhaps the greatest 20th Century Traditional (“Byzantine”) Text, and Received Text defender. Dr. Hills integrates his theological perspective alongside New Testament criticism. Edward F. Hills (1912-1981) was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After graduating from high school he attended Yale University where he excelled in the Latin classics and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduating summa cum laude in 1938. From Yale he entered Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia where he studied under the famous J. Grescham Machen and other well known scholars. Under the tutelage of Dr. N. B. Stonehouse, he was introduced to the new Greek New Testament of Westcott and Hort, Greek rival of the old Textus Receptus. Hills became exceedingly troubled concerning the significant differences between the two Greek texts. "Had not God inspired His Word? Had not God promised to preserve it?" How could this newly edited 19th century text displace the one used for centuries by the Church? In this same class, however, he also learned that among scholars in England there had been one loud, dissenting voice to this newly praised text, John William Burgon, an Oxford scholar who had opposed Westcott and Hort in the revision committee. Unfamiliar with this name, Hills wondered, "Who was this Burgon and what was his vociferous objection?" He determined to study this issue himself. After he obtained the Th.B. Degree from Westminster, he studied at Columbia Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia where he earned the Th.M. From there he studied at the University of Chicago for two years and transferred to Harvard University where he earned his Th.D. in New Testament text criticism. His years of intense research have resulted in two significant books: The King James Version Defended and Believing Bible Study [Dave - soon coming to e-Sword, too]. Edward F. THE TESTIMONY OF DR. EDWARD F. HILLS
Edward Freer Hills (1912-1981) was a respected Presbyterian scholar. He was a distinguished Latin and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale University. He also earned the Th.B. degree from Westminster Theological Seminary and the Th.M. degree from Columbia Theological Seminary. After doing doctoral work at the University of Chicago in New Testament textual criticism, he completed his program at Harvard, earning the Th.D. in this field. Though largely ignored by professional textual critics and translators, Hills has encouraged thousands of pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and Bible teachers by his defense of the Received Text and his exposure of the unbelief of modern textual criticism. In 1956 he published The King James Version Defended: A Christian View of the New Testament Manuscripts. Key chapters include “A Short History of Unbelief,” “A Christian View of the Biblical Text,” “The Facts of New Testament Textual Criticism,” “Dean Burgon and the Traditional New Testament Text,” and “The Textus Receptus and the King James Version.”

Hills devastated the Westcott-Text theories and exposed the rationalistic foundation of the entire modern version superstructure.

Following is Hills testimony about how he came to a “faith position” on the text-translation issue:

I have been interested in the problem of New Testament textual criticism since my high school days in the 1920’s. At that time I began to read the commentaries of Charles Hodge, books that were a part of my Presbyterian heritage. I noticed that Hodge would sometimes mention variant readings, most however, just to show that he was knowledgeable, for he rarely departed from ‘the common text’ (textus receptus) and ‘our English version’ (King James). Even so my curiosity was roused, so that in 1931, when I was a sophomore at Yale University I took down C.R. Gregory’s Canon and Text of the NT from a library shelf and began to read. I was dismayed at the large number of verses that, according to Gregory and his teachers Westcott and Hort, must be rejected from the Word of God. Nor was I much conformed by Gregory’s assurance that the necessary damage had been done and the rest of the text had been placed on an unassailable basis. How could I be sure of this? It seemed to me that the only way to gain assurance on this point was to go to Westminster Seminary and study the question under the tutelage of Dr. Machen, who preached in New Haven rather frequently in those days, talking to Yale students at least twice.

When I began to study New Testament textual criticism at Westminster (under Dr. Stonehouse) I found that the first day or so was mainly devoted to praising Dr. B.B. Warfield. He was lauded for being among the first to recognize the ‘epoch making’ importance of the theory of Westcott and Hort and for establishing the Westcott and Hort tradition at Princeton Seminary, a tradition which was now being faithfully perpetuated at Westminster Seminary. To me, however, all this was very puzzling. Dr. Warfield was a renowned defender of the Reformed faith and of the Westminster Confession, yet in the department of New Testament textual criticism he agreed entirely with liberals such as Westcott, Hort and C.R. Gregory. He professed to agree with the statement of the Westminster Confession that the Scriptures by God’s ‘singular care and providence’ had been ‘kept pure in all ages’, but it was obvious that this providential preservation of the Scripture was of no importance to Dr. Warfield when he actually began to deal with the problems of the New Testament. When he engaged in New Testament textual criticism, Dr. Warfield ignored the providential preservation of the Scriptures and treated the text of the New Testament as he would the text of any book or writing. ‘It matters not whether the writing before us be a letter from a friend, or an inscription from Carchemish, or a copy of a morning newspaper, or Shakespeare, or Homer, or the Bible.’

I may be reading back into my student days some of my later thinking, but it seems to me that even at that time I could see that the logic of Warfield’s naturalistic New Testament textual criticism led steadily downward toward modernism and unbelief. For if the providential preservation of the Scriptures was not important for the study of the New Testament text, then it could not have been important for the history of the New Testament text. And if it had not been important for the history of the New Testament, then it must have been non-existent. It could not have been a fact. And if the providential preservation of the Scriptures was not a fact, why should the infallible inspiration of the Scriptures be regarded as a fact? Why would God infallibly inspire a book and then decline to preserve it providentially? For example, why would God infallibly inspire the Gospel of Mark and then permit (as Warfield thought possible) the ending of it (describing the resurrection appearances of Christ) to be lost?

Why was Dr. Warfield so inconsistent in the realm of New Testament textual criticism? Dr. Van Til’s course in apologetics enabled me to supply the answer to this question. Dr. Warfield’s inconsistency was part of his scholastic inheritance, an error which had been handed down to him from the middle-ages. Let me explain. During the middle-ages the school men tried to reconcile the philosophy of Aristotle with the dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church by separating faith from reason and praying from thinking. While dealing with dogma, faith and prayer were appropriate, but the study of philosophy was reason’s province. So the medieval school men contended, and soon this doctrine of the separation of faith from reason became generally accepted throughout the medieval Roman Catholic Church.The Protestant Reformers were fully occupied with other matters. Hence they spent but little time combating this medieval, Roman Catholic error of the separation of faith and reason. Hence this false scholastic doctrine survived the Reformation and soon became embedded in the thinking of conservative Protestants everywhere. In the 18th century Butler and Paley built their apologetic systems on this false principle of the separation of faith and reason, and in the 19th century, at Princeton and other conservative theological seminaries, this scholastic principle even governed the curriculum and the way in which the several subjects were taught. Systematic theology, practical theology and homiletics were placed in one box labeled FAITH. All the other subjects, including New Testament textual criticism, biblical introduction, apologetics and philosophy, were placed in another box labeled REASON.

We see now why Dr. Warfield was so inconsistent. We see why he felt himself at liberty to adopt the naturalistic theories of Westcott and Hort and did not perceive that in so doing he was contradicting the Westminster Confession and even his own teaching in the realm of systematic theology. The reason was that Dr. Warfield kept these subjects in separate boxes. Like an authentic, medieval scholastic, he kept his systematic theology and the Westminster Confession in his FAITH box and his New Testament textual criticism in his REASON box. Since he never tried to mingle the contents of these two boxes, he was never fully aware of the discrepancies in his thinking.

When I began to study New Testament textual criticism at Westminster in 1935, I noticed another thing. Almost as much time was spent in disparaging Dean Burgon as in praising Dr. Warfield. This again aroused my curiosity. Who was this Dean Burgon? Upon investigation, I found that he had been a British scholar that had not fitted into the usual scholastic mold. He had not kept his theology and his New Testament textual criticism in two separate boxes, but had actually dared to make his theology the guiding principle of his New Testament textual criticism. For this he was pronounced ‘unscholarly.’Actually, however, he was merely following the logic of faith. He believed that the New Testament was the infallibly inspired Word of God. Hence it had been preserved down through the ages by God’s special providence, not secretly in holes and caves and on forgotten library shelves but publicly in the usage of God’s Church. Hence the text found in the vast majority of the New Testament manuscripts is the true text because this is the text that has been used by God’s Church. As soon as I began to read Burgon’s works, I was impressed by this logic of faith and also by the learned arguments by which Burgon refuted the contention of Tischendorf, Tregelles, Westcott, Hort, etc. Finally, after some years of hesitation, I definitely committed myself to his view in 1952.

Therefore, the true New Testament text is found today in the majority of the Greek New Testament manuscripts, in the Textus Receptus, and in the King James Version and other faithful translations of the Textus Receptus. And therefore also this same preserving providence operating today through the agency of all those true believers, however humble, who retain and defend the King James Version.

Abbott, Edwin 1838-1926

English schoolmaster and theologian, was born on the 20th of December 1838. He was educated at the City of London school and at St John's College, Cambridge, where he took the highest honours in the classical, mathematical and theological triposes, and became fellow of his college. In 1862 he took orders. After holding masterships at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and at Clifton College, he succeeded G. F. Mortimer as headmaster of the City of London school in 1865 at the early age of twenty-six. He was Hulsean lecturer in 1876.
He retired in 1889, and devoted himself to literary and theological pursuits. Dr Abbott's liberal inclinations in theology were prominent both in his educational views and in his books. His Shakespearian Grammar (1870) is a permanent contribution to English philology. In 1885 he published a life of Francis Bacon. His theological writings include three anonymously published religious romances - Philochristus (1878), Onesimus (1882), Sitanus (1906). More weighty contributions are the anonymous theological discussion The Kernel and the Husk (1886), Philomythus (1891), his book on Cardinal Newman as an Anglican (1892), and his article The Gospels in the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, embodying a critical view which caused considerable stir in the English theological world; he also wrote St Thomas of Canterbury, his Death and Miracles (1898), Johannine Vocabulary (1905), Johannine Grammar (1906).
His brother, Evelyn Abbott (1843-1901), was a well-known tutor of Balliol, Oxford, and author of a scholarly History of Greece.

Brown, Matthew 1776-1853

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Matthew Brown was born in the White Deer Valley of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where his father had removed from Carlisle to become one of the earliest settlers in the area. The father, an elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church, was an active opponent of colonial rule; he died of fever while serving in the Revolutionary War. The two year old Matthew was taken in by an uncle, William Brown, who lived near Harrisburg. As a prominent figure in Dauphin County, Brown was able to provide his adopted son with an education in local schools before enrolling him in Dickinson College in nearby Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Graduating with the class of 1794, Matthew returned to Northumberland County where he began to teach classical school; his intellectual pursuits brought him into contact with such noted individuals as Joseph Priestley. He also began to study divinity in 1796 and three years later he was licensed to preach by the Carlisle Presbytery. He was ordained in 1801.
His career as a minister bloomed when in that same year he became the pastor of the united congregations of Mifflin and Lost Creek in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1805 Brown was able to return to teaching when, as the first pastor of the Washington Presbyterian Church, he became the principal of the academy the church sponsored there. A year later, thanks largely to his influence with the state legislature, the academy was chartered as Washington College. Brown was elected the new institution's first president on December 13, 1806. Ten very busy years as both minister and president came to an end in 1816 when Brown resigned from the college to concentrate on his pastoral duties with the local church.
Brown is said to have turned down the presidency of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. He did leave his congregation, however, when in 1822 he was named as the president of Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, just ten miles from the college he had helped to found fifteen years before. He served in this position for twenty-three years, during which his energy helped advance the institution in its rivalry with its neighbor, Washington College. His efforts earned him honorary doctor of divinity degrees from Princeton, Hamilton, and Jefferson. In 1845, he retired on the grounds of declining health, although he continued to preach as a visitor. Matthew Brown died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the home of his son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Riddle on July 29, 1853, and was buried at Washington, Pennsylvania. Twelve years later, the two neighboring institutions he had done so much to found merged in March 1865 to form Washington and Jefferson College.

Coffin, Charles 1775-1853

The Rev. Charles Coffin was the son of Dr. Charles Coffin, a physician of Newburyport. After graduating at Harvard College in 1793, where he was noted as a very diligent student, he studied theology, and was licensed to preach in his native town in 1804, the ordination sermon being delivered by the Rev. Dr. Samuel Spring.
In 1810 he was elected President of Greenville College in Tennessee, where he remained until 1827, when he accepted the presidency of Knoxville (East Tennessee) College, a position he filled with distinguished ability for six years.
Rev. Dr. McCorkle says: "He had well-formed features, expressive countenance, and was in his whole bearing benignant, dignified, and venerable. he possessed excellent intellectual powers, which he retained in great vigor to the last."

Glendy, John 1755-1832

GLENDY, John, clergyman, born in Londonderry, Ireland, 24 June, 1755" died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 4 October, 1832. He was educated at the University of Glasgow, where, after studying theology, he was ordained. He accepted a call from the Church in Londonderry, and remained there until he was exiled during the Irish insurrection of 1798, in which he protested against the aggressive measures of the government, and rendered himself obnoxious to the nobility. He arrived in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1799, and afterward supplied the congregations of Staunton and Bethel, Augusta County, Virginia, for nearly two years, he was invited by President Jefferson to be his guest in Washington, and during his visit delivered a discourse in the capitol. In 1803-'30 he was pastor of the 2d Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. Maryland In 1806 he served as chaplain of the United States House of Representatives, and in 1815 and 1816 of the senate. In 1822 the University of Maryland gave him the degree of D. D. Henry Davis, a clergyman, was born in East Hampton, New York, September 15, 1771. He was the second president of Middlebury College in Vermont, serving from 1809-1818. He later became president of Hamilton College. He died in Clinton, New York, March 9, 1852.

Romeyn, John Brodhead 1777-1825

John Brodhead Romeyn was born in Marbletown, NY. He attended Columbia College (now Columbia University) in New York City. After graduating with honors in 1795, he returned to his home in Schenectady, NY to study theology with his father Dirck, pastor of Schenectady's Reformed Dutch Church. He was ordained in Rhinebeck, NY in 1799. In April of that year he married Harriet Bleecker. In 1803, Romeyn accepted a call to Schenectady's First Presbyterian Church. The following year he moved again, this time to the First Presbyterian Church of Albany. In 1808 he accepted a call to Cedar Street Church, New York City. Except for the years 1813-14, which he and Harriet spent in Europe, Romeyn remained at Cedar Street Church until his death in 1825. Romeyn served as General Assembly Moderator in 1810, and was instrumental in the creation of the Princeton Theological Seminary, and of the American Bible Society. http://www.history.pcusa.org/collections/findingaids/fa.cfm?record_id=308

Linn, John Blair 1777-1804

John Blair Linn (1777-1804), a Presbyterian minister like his father William Linn, J.B. Linn was educated at Columbia (B.A. 1795, M.A. 1797) and Union College (M.A. 1797). A prolific writer, Linn published five volumes of poetry and three of theological prose, and had a play produced in New York, all in the space of a decade.

McConaughy (M'Conaughy), David 1775-1852

David McConaughy (September 29, 1775 – January 29, 1852) was an American Presbyterian clergyman and the fourth president of Washington College from 1831 to 1852.

David McConaughy was born on September 29, 1775 in Menallen, Pennsylvania, six miles from Gettysburg in what was then York County. He was tutored locally and attended the Rev. Alexander Dobbin's classical School in Gettysburg. He attended Dickinson College in nearby Carlisle. He was elected to the Union Philosophical Society and graduated in September 1795 with the honor of being assigned the Latin Salutary. He continued his studies in theology under Rev. Nathan Grier and on October 5, 1797, the New Castle presbytery licensed him to preach.
After a time as a traveling preacher, he became the head of the congregation at Upper Marsh Creek in October 1800. When in 1813 the new Adams County seat was inaugurated in nearby Gettysburg, the church moved into town. In the ensuing two decades, McConaughy became an active figure in Gettysburg, founding a grammar school in 1807, which the county took over in 1812, as well as founding and serving as first president of the first Temperance Society in Adams County. His reputation as a teacher led Washington College to offer him the post of president in March 1830. Although he did not accept initially due to family difficulties, he accepted the trustees' second offer in December 1831. Installed in May 1832, he served Washington College through difficult times for more than sixteen years until his retirement at age 74 in 1849.
He married Mary Mahon of Shippensburg in the spring of 1802. She lived to survive him after fifty years of marriage, though they had no children. David McConaughy died at his home in Washington, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1852. http://chronicles.dickinson.edu/encyclo/m/ed_mcConaughyD.htm

Blatchford, Samuel 1767-1828

Samuel Blatchford was a presbyterian minister and the first president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He was born in Devonport, Devon, England in 1767. He was educated at the Dissenting College of Theology at Homerton, now called Homerton College, Cambridge. He married Alicia Windeatt on March 25, 1788. On November 4, 1789, he was ordained and became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Kingsbridge, Devon. In 1791, he became pastor of the church in Topsham, Devon. In 1795, he became pastor of a church in Bedford, Westchester County, New York State, and later pastor of a church in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1804, he became pastor of the Presbyterian churches in Lansingburgh and Waterford (which later merged). He was also asked to be principal of Lansingburgh Academy. In 1805, he was appointed a trustee of Union College and later a member of the Board of Examiners. In 1824, Stephen van Rensselaer appointed him trustee and the first president of the Rensselaer School, which grew to become Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was given an honorary master's degree by Yale College in 1798 and the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Williams College in 1808.
He died in Lansingburgh on March 27, 1828. Eliphalet Nott, the president of Union College and later the third president of Rensselaer, delivered the sermon at the funeral services. His grandson Samuel Blatchford was an attorney, judge and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Rev. Samuel Blatchford, D.D., the first president of the Institute, was born in Devonshire County, England in 1767. He was educated for the ministry at the Dissenting College of Theology, at Homerton, near London; married in 1788; ordained in 1789 pastor over the Presbyterian Church in Kingston, Devonshire. In 1791 he became pastor of the church in Topsham, England, where he remained until he was called to a church at Bedford, Westchester County, N.Y., in 1795. He then moved on to Bridgeport, Conn., and in 1804 he was called to take charge of the church at Lansingburgh and Waterford, N.Y. Here an acquaintance with the Hon. Stephen Van Rensselaer grew into a friendship. In 1824, Blatchford was named trustee and first president of the Rensselaer School. This position he held for four years. John William Burgon (21 August 1813 – 4 August 1888) was an English Anglican divine who become the Dean of Chichester Cathedral in 1876. He is remembered for his passionate defense of the historicity and Mosaic authorship of Genesis and of Biblical inerrancy in general.
